There is a threshold beyond which one becomes
a Cultural Nomad.
It is usually measured in the time one has spent living in a foreign
culture. You don’t reach the threshold when you have completely
integrated into the new culture - that hardly ever happens - you
reach the threshold when you realize that you can't go back to your
own.
Some Cultural Nomads return home to find that
they no longer fit in
(if indeed they ever did) and become bitter or cynical critics of what
was once their home. Others come back and devote themselves to
preaching the ways of "the rest of the world" to their ignorant friends
and family members. Others simply never return.
We at Cultural-Nomad.com believe that the most
fortunate Cultural
Nomads are those who are able to accept their Nomad status,
and move easily between many different cultures - including their
“home” culture - while recognizing that none of these cultures will
ever be home. This type of Cultural Nomad has done something the
others haven't: given up the dream of ever having a ready-made
"home” provided by their culture -- in exchange for the privilege of
designing their own “home”.
This website is for Cultural Nomads of all
types, including those who have never set foot off their native soil
but are, nonetheless, nomads of the cultural variety. The idea is to
promote Cultural Nomadity of the highest order - the kind that
transcends culture yet also celebrates what is good in the many different
cultures of the world (and discards what is not so good).
Here you will find useful information for the Cultural Nomad
(How),
including travel info and links to online ticket agencies, links to
sites promoting education and work opportunities around the world,
and a link to a superb site for Expats:
Escape Artist
with pretty much everything you need to know to establish
yourself overseas, including investment, tax, and job links.
Cultural-Nomad.com is also a forum for your experiences as
Cultural
Nomads. If you have a Nomad-related site you'd like us to link to, or if
you have thoughts, poems, essays, etc. that you'd like us to post here,
send us your URL or writing, etc.,
and if we like them we'll put them up
for everyone to see.
If you are curious about other Cultural Nomads,

gallery of Cultural Nomads past and present.
Finally, Cultural-Nomad.com exists to promote
international relations
between people, not between nations or governments. With that in
mind, welcome to Nomadity - and please make yourself at Home.
